Education has been a key problem in Pakistan for decades now. What is supposed to be a simplistic basic facility in a country, has proven to be quite complex in Pakistan. However, in recent years School Education Department (SED) has made tons of innovative moves to help make education the building block of the national youth.
SED Punjab is one of the biggest departments when it comes to manpower, 48,000 schools all over Punjab are run by 400,000 teachers.
Punjab has one of the world’s largest education systems, and it has a huge potential to modify its educational infrastructure and move forward toward a brighter future. As a result, the administration designated creating a robust and high-delivery education system as a priority goal in 2018 to increase human capital investment in the country.
Punjab’s Education Ministry began methodically identifying gaps and designing impact-driven interventions to enhance the system, which would later reflect on the province’s overall educational outcomes. The administration began working toward three objectives: improving access, equity, and governance in Punjab’s educational environment.
Here are some of the achievements and plans SED was able to reach since 2018.
Single Nation Curriculum
SED Punjab was able to fulfill another one of its plans which involved a Single Nation Curriculum (SNC). This initiative aimed to minimize the socio gap between students and have every school, regardless of their size and stature, follow the same curriculum to maintain equality. SNC has been open to feedback from the public and stakeholders which has allowed continuous changes to the system as per suggestions and recommendations.
After years of discrimination, transgenders received their lawful rights to a safe education. SED was able to inaugurate primary schools and high schools for the transgender community in Pakistan.
Following an extraordinary reception in Multan, Punjab’s Minister for School Education, Murad Raas, decided to expand the programme by constructing schools in the province’s nine divisional headquarters. By February 2022, two of these schools will be functioning in Lahore.
Human Resource Management Information System
HRMIS enabled transparent and efficient management of teacher transfers, promotions, leaves, and pensions by transforming processes into digital form. The system greatly assisted the department in eliminating corruption, without the system education institutes and departments were involved in corruption of billions of rupees each year.
SED, by the use of the system, was successful in electronically processing 3,550,381 leaves and 7,559 retirements. A total of 81,577 transfer orders were processed after 162,341 applications for teacher transfers were submitted.
Electronic submission of 434,746 Annual Confidential Reports has eliminated the margins of bribery and favoritism that existed in the traditional system, which relied heavily on paper and humans.
Mandatory Quran Classes
Another significant move by the SED is the introduction of mandatory Quran teaching in schools, beginning in first grade and continuing until eighth grade.
With translation, the Holy Quran will be recited during these lessons. According to SED, Islam has been misrepresented among the world and inside Pakistan, and it’s high time to turn it around. The initiative will also help eliminate extremist ideologies in future generations.
Insaf Afternoon School Programme
In addition, SED launched the Insaf Afternoon School Programme (IASP) to expand access to free, high-quality education for all children in Punjab. Infrastructure expenditures associated with such a large objective have been removed, demonstrating resource optimization and allowing the government to save roughly PKR 240 billion. SED was able to achieve this by upgrading 7,008 primary schools to elementary schools during the afternoon shifts.
Along with these groundbreaking initiatives, the SED plans to announce more high-scale plans that will further improve the quality of education in Punjab.
